BIOGRAPHY
Matthias Schwab was born on December 9, 1994, in Schladming, Austria. He currently resides in Rohrmoos, Austria. Standing at 183 cm tall, Matthias comes from a family deeply rooted in sports. His father, Andreas, competed in the bobsleigh event at the 1976 Winter Olympics. Matthias has three siblings: Andreas, Nora, and Johannes.
Personal Background
Matthias pursued his education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he played for the Vanderbilt Men's Golf Team. During his time there, he earned his Bachlors’s degree in Coporate Startegy, and had an illustrious college golf career. He was a three-time All-American and part of the team’s 2017 SEC Championship Victory.
Education and Early Career
Matthias’s amateur career was marked by significant achievements. He reached the final of the 2012 Amateur Championship and won several tournaments, including the 2010 Austrian Amateur, the 2012 Slovenian International Amateur, and the 2015 Mason Rudolph Championship. He represented Europe at the 2012 Junior Ryder cup and in the 2015 and 2016 European Palmer Cup team where they won against the US. He also represented Austria at the 2016 World Amateur Team Championship in Mexico where the team brought home the bronze medal.
Amateur Success
Matthias turned professional in June 2017 and quickly made a name for himself on the Challenge Tour and subsequently on the European Tour. In his rookie year, he tied for fourth at the Hero Indian Open and ended the year 72nd on the Race to Dubai. His 2019 season was particularly noteworthy, with ten top-10 finishes, including second place at both the Porsche European Open and Turkish Airlines Open. He finished in a tie for fourth at the Italian Open and WGC-HSBC Champions. He finished 17th in the Race to Dubai rankings that year and climbed to 80th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
In 2021, Matthias earned his PGA Tour card and played two seasons in the US. In his rookie season on the PGA Tour, he recorded 3 top-10 finishes and ended the season in the top 125 in the FedEx Cup rankings, retaining his card. In the subsequent season, he finished just outside the 125. He is currently playing on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.
Professional Career
Outside of golf, Matthias enjoys skiing, tennis, hiking, playing FIFA, and following Formula 1. He is an avid fan of RB Leipzig and considers Roger Federer his role model. He enjoys cycling, going out with his Doberman in the mountains, and spending time with his family.
